Kata
Kata is a series of techniques performed against imaginary multiple
opponents, used in Karate to develop not only fighting technique but also
fighting spirit. In Kata, the total performance must be visualized, the
imaginary opponents must be made real and each technique carried out with an
intensity and commitment that demonstrates one hundred percent effort. It is
through Kata that Karate students can realize his or her full potential without
having to control their techniques.
When you watch a Kata demonstration, you will see Karate in its purest form. It
is a demonstration that truly combines the mind and the body and elevates the
practice of Karate. Traditional Karate practitioners perform the same Kata that
martial arts originators have done for hundreds of years. Each traditional Kata
has a history and purpose. By holding true to the spirit of the Kata in their
purest form, traditionalists show a deep respect for the history, philosophy and
art of Karate.
Kumite
In Shiai Kumite, two competitors face each other and attack freely. Contact
is discouraged through penalties.
In order to score, the competitor must direct a clean, powerful technique to one
of the designated target areas on their opponent. The blow must come very close,
but ideally should not make contact. A point may be awarded if there is light
contact. Excessive contact to the opponent will result in a foul being called,
which means the opponent receives a point. Each match is timed. The winner is
the competitor with the most points at the end of the time period.
